Green Gable Alpacas was established in October 2009 when following a family tragedy, we decided to leave corporate and city life behind and move from Hamilton, Ontario to the tiny rural community of Birch Hill, Prince Edward Island. We didn't know a soul on the Island and had never before expeirenced country living.
We relocated to a beautiful, century-old farm home in January 2010 and began renovations and retro fits to our 11 acre property in preparation for our alpacas' arrival. Box stalls and cattle stanchions were removed from our hip-roof barn, post holes dug and the beginnings of nearly 2000 linear feet of fencing began. Work also began on renovating what used to be the previous dairy farm's milk house into a rustic retail shop, aptly named the Fiber House Boutique.
Our first shipment of 30 alpacas arrived the first of March with the remaining arriving in early August. This foundation stock was selected from established farms from across the country - from as far away as British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario and Nova Scotia. Over the course of the summer we were blessed with the on-farm birth of seven crias.
Mom Janet, has been a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) for almost 25 years and recently earned her Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Toronto. Daughter Rachel, is a grade 12 student at Westisle Composite High School in PEI. She eagerly traded in her 10 minute walk to her inner city school and ad hoc trips to the mall for a 50km bus ride to school and the more laid back atmosphere of rural PEI.
We are both active in the farm operations and retail sides of the business. It has only been a short while, but we have both have acclimatized to the slower paced, more relaxed life style of farming in rural PEI.
